Not sure if any other alternative would be better if the OPSEC behind is not ok as they emphasize at the end of the article:

• Avoid linking recovery emails or phone numbers that can directly tie back to personal identities or primary business activities.
  
• Consider using secondary, disposable emails or virtual phone numbers that offer an additional layer of anonymity.
  
• Use a good VPN service to hide your IP address whenever possible. (Failure to do this is what compromised a Proton Mail user in France who was arrested after after police obtained IP logs.)
  
• Consider purchasing services using an anonymous payment method.
  
• Stay informed about the legal obligations and policies of communication service providers, especially regarding their compliance with international law enforcement requests.

Unfortunately, they are forced to do so by Swiss law. If they charged law enforcement for these requests, it would actually help the people by discouraging them from doing thousands of requests

This is why you can't ever mix your normal activity with your darkweb/underground activity. Also there's a difference between privacy, security, and anonymity. Unfortunately there's little in the way of options that give you all three. Protonmail was the only real clearnet email option besides Tutanota, now there's only hosting your own mail server.

A key point to note in this:

As anyone who follows developments with Proton probably knows, this is similar to the incident that resulted in the arrest of a French activist a year or two ago--who remembers anymore?

What we should learn from this:

--Proton MUST comply with Swiss law, and every year there is an increasing number of requests for data

--Protonmail DOES have IP logs and your RECOVERY EMAIL is NOT encrypted and you should operate under the assumption that it can be used to identify you.

--ProtonVPN does NOT keep logs


With this knowledge, you should be able to use Proton services safely. But a good thing to keep in mind is that ALL digital mediums are vulnerable in one way or another.

Every year is worse than the last, but emails are insecure anyway, you shouldn't do anything that need privacy via email

I imagine all email providers would have to disclose info to authorities. only difference is if they do without the court telling them to
