Proton is too troublesome. You need to verify another email address before you can use it.

Why would anyone use a service like ProtonMail for any troublesome activities anyway? There's better providers for throwaway mails, such as cock.li. If you want a permanent mail solution then you should definitely self host:

this sucks. what could be an alternative to proton? I never like they request a recovery email / phone. ideally something that doesn't require any of those
