I can understand not having heard of Haibane Renmei, but Texhnolyze is definitely worth checking out if you're into more philosophical and/or yakuza themed anime. If you like anime like Serial Experiments Lain you'll definitely like Texhnolyze.

Lain, Texhnolyze and Haibane Renmei all feature characters designed by Yoshitoshi Abe, his style definitely fits the vibe really well. Let me know what you think if you ever get around to watching it!
