I agree with you, better to be in a Rolls Royce.
I believe the reason people say it is because so many humans spend their entire life chasing money thinking it will make them happy.
Thus, if you're rich and know it doesn't bring happiness, you can save people the pain and suffering of wasting their entire life by giving them the answer in advance.

Jordan Peterson said something that seems true, that for your life to not suck, you have to have most major aspects of it at an acceptable level.
Friends/Family, Career, Health. If one is very jacked up, you won't be happy.
If you don't have friends or family as an example, no amount of money will make you happy.
If you don't have health, money won't make you happy.
You have to have it all as a reasonable level.

Also the women around rich guys like Tate are often very pretty.
For a woman, being young and pretty is a form of being rich.
So it sort of goes both ways.

The pretty women are in a way selling their looks to a guy who has the money to pay for them.
It doesn't have to be sex, getting married to them or just dating them could be the implied purchase.
