You can use Mullvad payed for in monero. If not use tor bridges. Make sure you seperate all of your clearnet activites from your darknet ones. And I would suggest not to be signed into any personal accounts that can lead back to you. And make a vm to seperate what your doing, you can use Whonix or Qubes. Like DeSnake said don't just rely on just one piece on security for not getting caught.

subjective and depends on technical ability, threat model, and what exactly it is you're trying to do but qubes installed directly onto your machine (as qubes installed via vm really doesn't work as it should and doesn't provide as much protection) or thumbdrive whonix.

i would say that i have decent understanding, the reason i am asking is to have some insight about other peoples opinions. IF i were to have some "fun", I would go to a location where there is free wifi, load up kali linux with mullvad vpn and use only proxychains for accessing the internet. other than that never start that laptop at home and like you said keep all accounts seperated from my private accounts.
